Neighbourhood Houses from King Island to Dunalley, St Helens to Zeehan are celebrating their many achievements over the last challenging year, in Neighbourhood House Week 2021.

Neighbourhood House Week runs from 8th to 14th May 2021.  Our theme for the Week is #communityisthesolution.  Neighbourhood House Week celebrates the benefits and impact of working together within local communities.  We acknowledge the staff and over 1000 volunteers across the network of 35 Houses who are such a significant part of that community support.

“We’re proud to join the over 1000 Neighbourhood Houses and Centres across Australia who are also celebrating this week”, said Michael Bishop, recently appointed CEO of the peak body Neighbourhood Houses Tasmania.

The flexibility and value of ‘Place-Based’ community development approaches taken by Neighbourhood Houses was acknowledged by State Government in 2020 when they provided emergency pandemic funding to ensure isolated and vulnerable people received continued support. Physical distancing requirements meant the loss of what, for many, were their only regular social interactions.  When lockdown started in 2020 staff and volunteers adapted to outreach models, delivered services and activities online, and supported people to use digital technologies, often while learning these technologies themselves.

“Staff and volunteers have risen to these challenges, adapting their services to maintain social connection and reduce isolation for many families and individuals who have been so impacted by the Pandemic.” said Mr Bishop.

Staff and volunteers will celebrate Neighbourhood House Week 2021 by getting back together with local and regional events across the network. For more information about the events and activities on offer and how to get involved, check the NHT website and the Facebook pages for individual Houses.
